Whether you’ve been using your Cricut for a week or a year, there are always techniques and shortcuts that can save you time, protect your tools, and produce better results. These 15 tips come directly from the kind of hard-won experience that usually only comes after a few ruined projects. Read through them once and you’ll be ahead of where most crafters are after months of trial and error.

Blades and Cutting Tools

Tip 1: Keep foil and glitter away from your fine-point blade. Metallic foil cardstock and hard-bonded glitter cardstock are notoriously abrasive and will dull a fine-point blade after just a few projects. Designate an old or inexpensive blade specifically for these materials and keep your sharp blade for regular cardstock and vinyl. Label the housings with a small dot of nail polish to tell them apart.
Tip 2: Do a test cut before every big project. Before you commit a full sheet of expensive specialty paper or a large piece of leather to a cut, use the built-in Test Cut feature in Design Space. It cuts a small triangle in the corner of your material so you can verify that the blade depth and pressure are correct without wasting material. One small test cut now saves a lot of frustration later.
Tip 3: Save custom material settings. If you regularly cut a specific brand of cardstock, vinyl, or specialty material at custom settings, save those settings in Design Space. After dialing in your preferred pressure and speed, click Save as Custom Material on the material selection screen. You’ll find it under “Custom” in your material list next time, so you never have to re-enter settings from scratch.

Mat Care and Maintenance

Tip 4: Clean your mats to restore tackiness. A mat that’s lost its stick doesn’t have to be thrown away. Wash it gently under lukewarm water with a small amount of mild dish soap and a soft brush — never anything abrasive. Rinse well, pat dry with a lint-free cloth, and allow it to air dry completely. As it dries, the adhesive reactivates and the mat often performs like new. Avoid paper towels, which leave fibers on the mat.
Tip 5: Store mats with their protective cover sheets. Every Cricut mat ships with a clear protective cover sheet. Keep these and always replace the cover on your mat after use. This prevents dust, pet hair, and debris from collecting on the adhesive surface between projects, dramatically extending the life of each mat.
Tip 6: Use the Snap Mat feature for smaller cuts. When you only need to cut a small design, you don’t have to use an entire mat’s worth of material. The Snap Mat feature in Design Space (available in the mobile app) lets you take a photo of your mat with leftover material and automatically detects where usable space remains, so you can position your design precisely over that area. It’s a huge material saver for small projects.

Working with Iron-On and Heat Transfer

Tip 7: Always mirror iron-on designs before cutting. Heat transfer vinyl is cut from the back side — the carrier sheet faces up, the vinyl faces down. This means your design will be flipped when you press it. Enable the Mirror toggle on the mat preview screen in Design Space for every iron-on layer, every single time. Make it a habit you never skip.
Tip 8: Use the Cricut Heat Guide for exact settings. Guessing temperature and press time is the number one reason iron-on projects fail. The Cricut Heat Guide at cricut.com/heatguide gives you exact temperature, time, and pressure settings for every combination of iron-on material and fabric. Bookmark it on your phone and check it before every press session — even for materials you’ve pressed before, because different fabric blends require different settings.

Design Space Skills

Tip 9: Learn the Offset feature for stickers and layered designs. The Offset tool in Design Space creates an outline or shadow shape around any image or text layer. It’s perfect for adding a white border around stickers so they stand out, or for creating a drop-shadow effect on layered vinyl designs. Select your image, click Offset in the top toolbar, and adjust the distance with the slider. Weld the offset shape to clean it up if needed.
Tip 10: Group and ungroup objects to work faster. When you have a multi-element design, grouping all the layers together (select all, then click Group in the top toolbar) means you can move, resize, and position the entire design as one unit without anything drifting out of alignment. Ungroup it when you need to edit individual layers. This is one of the most time-saving habits you can develop in Design Space.
Tip 11: Use Slice to cut shapes out of each other. The Slice tool splits two overlapping shapes into separate pieces, removing the overlapping area. For example, place a circle on top of a square, select both, and click Slice — you’ll end up with a square with a circle hole cut from it. It’s invaluable for creating negative-space designs, custom monograms, and multi-layer vinyl cutouts.
Tip 12: Use Weld to merge overlapping layers into one cut path. When you have overlapping shapes or script text letters that should cut as a single connected piece, the Weld tool merges them into one unified shape. This eliminates the interior cut lines between letters, which is essential for script fonts to look right. Select all the layers you want to merge, then click Weld at the bottom of the Layers panel.
Tip 13: Organize projects in Design Space folders. If your project library is growing, use folders to stay organized. In Design Space’s home screen, create folders by category — Cards, Apparel, Home Décor, Holiday — and drag your saved projects into them. Searching through dozens of untitled projects wastes time; organized folders mean you can find and re-cut a design in seconds.

Smart Materials and Advanced Features

Tip 14: Know when to use Smart Materials vs regular materials with mats. Smart Materials (Smart Vinyl, Smart Iron-On, Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock) cut without a mat on the Cricut Maker 3, Explore 3, and Joy — which is fast and convenient. However, they come in a limited range of colors compared to standard roll vinyl, and they cost slightly more per square inch. For everyday small projects, Smart Materials are a huge time-saver. For specialty colors, glitter finishes, or less common material types, stick with standard materials on a mat.
Tip 15: Keep your machine’s firmware updated. Cricut regularly releases firmware updates that improve cutting performance, add compatibility for new materials, and fix bugs. Design Space will prompt you to update when a new firmware version is available — don’t skip these prompts. Updates take just a few minutes and ensure your machine performs at its best. You can also check your current firmware version under Account > Firmware Update in Design Space.
