Set Up Your Cricut Explore: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

The Cricut Explore series is the go-to choice for crafters who love working with vinyl, iron-on, cardstock, and other everyday materials. From creating custom decals and T-shirt designs to intricate paper cards, the Explore line delivers precise, reliable cuts for a wide range of popular projects. Follow the steps below to get any Explore model connected and ready to cut.

1. Unbox and Check Contents

   Remove all packaging materials and confirm the following items are included:

   • Cricut Explore machine
   • Power adapter
   • USB cable
   • LightGrip cutting mat (12” × 12”)
   • Fine-Point Blade (pre-installed)
   • Getting-started materials

   Inspect the machine for any damage before proceeding.

2. Download Cricut Design Space

   On your computer or mobile device, navigate to cricut.com/setup and download the free Cricut Design Space app. Design Space is available for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, and is required to send designs to your Explore machine.

3. Sign In or Create a Cricut Account

   Open Design Space and sign in to your existing Cricut account, or select Create Account to register a new one using your email address. Your account stores your designs and machine settings across all your devices.

4. Power On Your Cricut Explore

   Press the power button to turn on your machine. Place it on a flat, stable surface with several inches of clearance in front and behind the machine so the mat can feed in and out without obstruction.

5. Connect Your Explore to Your Device

   Select your preferred connection method:

   USB Connection

   Connect the included USB cable from the back of the Explore machine to your computer. Design Space will automatically detect the machine once connected.

   Bluetooth Connection

   Enable Bluetooth on your computer or mobile device. Power on the Explore, then find it in your device’s Bluetooth settings and pair it. Once paired, Design Space will detect the machine. Note: Some older Explore models may require a Bluetooth adapter for desktop computers.

6. Complete the New Machine Setup Wizard

   Design Space will launch the New Machine Setup wizard when it detects your Explore for the first time. Follow all on-screen prompts to confirm your model and complete initial configuration.

7. Load the Mat and Materials

   Place your material onto the LightGrip cutting mat, pressing it down firmly to ensure it adheres evenly. Align the left edge of the mat with the guides on the machine’s roller bar, then press the Load/Unload arrow button to feed the mat into cutting position.

8. Cut the Welcome Card Project

   Design Space will prompt you to cut a welcome card as your first project. When the C button begins flashing, press it to start the cut. The machine will cut out the sample card project automatically.

9. Unload the Mat and Peel Your Project

   Once cutting is complete, press the Load/Unload button to eject the mat. Flex the mat away from the material to release it cleanly. Peel away the individual cut pieces and assemble your welcome card.

Explore 3, 4, and 5 support Smart Materials, allowing matless cutting — feed compatible Smart Materials directly into the machine. Older models (Explore One, Explore Air, and Explore Air 2) require a cutting mat for all materials.

If you have an Explore Air 2, use the Smart Set Dial on the top of the machine to select your material type (such as Cardstock, Vinyl, or Iron-On) before pressing the C button to cut. Newer Explore models (Explore 3 and later) use digital material settings in Design Space instead of a physical dial, giving you access to a broader material library.
